On the first lap John Tuckett (ActivCycles-Fentimens) and Shaun Tyson (Adept Precision RT) broke away from the main field. By the 3rd lap the gap had grown to 1 minute and 20 seconds from the remaining riders.
With less than 2 miles to go Tyson managed to break away from the tiring Tuckett, but had not realised that Rob Carter (Velo 29CT) and Dominic Munnelly (ActivCycles-Fentimens) were approaching at a very fast pace resulting in Munnelly sprinting past Carter to take his 3rd Thornton Trophy win in a row.
The only consolation for Tyson was the fact that he had taken both the prime prizes of the climb of the Ryals earlier in the race.
The race was run off in overcast conditions which were cool for this time of year.

A total of 84 riders started the race covering 6 laps around a circuit based on Longhirst near Morpeth at a distance of 72 km. The 84 riders were divided into 3 groups based on a handicap system that aims for all 3 groups to finish at the same time.
On the first lap 3 riders broke away from the 1st group and was reduced to 2 when 1 rider punctured leaving Neil Baxter (Activcycle-Fentimens) and Luke Price (Fiesten Tempo) to continue their breakaway.
This lasted to the 5th lap when the 3rd group, who had already caught and passed the 2nd group over took the leaders. This left a group containing eventual winner Matty Kipling (MTS Cyclesport Inkland) and, recently returned from the Tour of Murcia, James Moss (Endura) to fight it out to the finish. Moss eventually coming in 3rd behind 2nd place Simon Baxter (Adept Precision RT) in a very close sprint finish of 11 riders.
Junior winner of the day was Alex Bottomley (Fiesten Tempo) with James Anderson (Blackhawk bikes) taking the veterans prize.
Many thanks for all those who participated, the officials and marshals, also Steve Walton and Ian Spensely for supervising the race
